Located in the town of Yamagata, eight miles north of Sendai, Eight Horses Temple Shrine is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines dedicated to the god of war and the sea, Hachiman. Founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE), it has a long history dating back over 1,300 years. Visitors can see beautiful examples of Edo period architecture and enjoy stunning views of Matsushima Bay.

Cultural notes
This shrine is famous for its beautiful architecture, including an impressive five-story pagoda and beautiful gardens. According to legend, Hachiman appeared to a young boy who had lost his horse, and from then on, the god watched over travelers crossing the nearby bridge.
