Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, believed to represent the power and fertility of Inari Okami. During New Year's (Oshogatsu), visitors bring offerings of rice, sake, and sweet rice balls (chankonabe) to honor the deity.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 747 CE by Prince Nariakira, who built a humble shrine to honor his mother's favor, which led to his ascension to power. The shrine has been rebuilt and renovated numerous times over the centuries, with significant restorations made during the Edo period.
