Takahashi Shrine, also known as Takahashi no Kami or Takamatsukuni, is a Shinto shrine located in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is one of the oldest and most important shrines in Kyushu. The shrine is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess, and is also enshrined with the god Hachiman Okami, patron deity of warriors and scholars. The shrine's architecture reflects the Heian period style, with a prominent torii gate and a large hall for rituals. Takahashi Shrine is particularly famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional festivals, including the 'Hinode Tanabata' festival, which celebrates the meeting of two lovers in heaven.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the shrine's beauty, visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy the golden light of the setting sun on the torii gate.

Cultural notes

As a major Shinto site, Takahashi Shrine is deeply connected to Japanese mythology. According to legend, Hachiman Okami visited this shrine during his travels to grant the local people prosperity and good fortune. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in late January to honor Hachiman Okami.
