Akibayashi Shrine, located in the heart of Kanazawa, is one of Japan's most beautiful and historic shrines. Dedicated to the Shinto god Ryujin, the shrine's main hall features a stunning golden tiled roof, typical of Edo period architecture. The shrine's grounds also boast an impressive garden with over 1,000 cherry blossom trees, a popular spot for springtime viewing parties.

Visitor tip
For the best views of the garden, visit at dawn or dusk when the cherry blossoms are lit by the soft morning or evening light.
Cultural notes
Akibayashi Shrine is often visited during the spring festival, Yozakura, to pray for good health and prosperity. The shrine's wooden statue of Ryujin is adorned with offerings of sake and sweets, as per Shinto tradition.
Historical note
The shrine was originally constructed in 1367 during the Muromachi period and has undergone numerous renovations and expansions since then.
