Shiga

Located in the town of Matsuo, Matsumoto Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto god of education and learning, as well as Hachiman, the deity of war. This shrine complex includes several smaller shrines within its grounds, including a shrine for the god of health and a shrine dedicated to the goddess Ohoi. The shrine's architecture reflects various historical periods, with elements from the Heian period visible in the main hall.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Matsumoto Shrine is also famous for its role in Japanese folklore as a site where Hachiman was said to have appeared after his return from battle. The shrine's name refers to the large pine tree (松) located at its entrance, which is believed to be a sacred tree.

Historical note

The current main hall was built during the Kamakura period, while the smaller shrines were constructed over time.
