高幢神社

Tokushima

High Tower Shrine, located in Tokushima Prefecture, is dedicated to the Shinto deity of the sea and storms, Urashima Taro's brother Okuninushi no Kami. The shrine's architecture reflects its connection to the sea, with wooden torii gates and a large sea god statue. Visitors can experience traditional Japanese culture by participating in festivals such as the Summer Festival, which includes games, food stalls, and live performances.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the sea god statue, visit at low tide when the water recedes and expose the base of the statue.

Cultural notes

According to local legend, Urashima Taro's brother Okuninushi no Kami appeared before the shrine's founder, granting him permission to build the shrine. This mythological event is still celebrated during festivals at the shrine.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 1889, during the Meiji period, to commemorate the discovery of the remains of Okuninushi no Kami in 1888.
