Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the sea god statue, visit at low tide when the water recedes and expose the base of the statue.
Cultural notes
According to local legend, Urashima Taro's brother Okuninushi no Kami appeared before the shrine's founder, granting him permission to build the shrine. This mythological event is still celebrated during festivals at the shrine.
Historical note
The shrine was founded in 1889, during the Meiji period, to commemorate the discovery of the remains of Okuninushi no Kami in 1888.
