Eight-Horned Shrine, dedicated to the Shinto deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto, is one of Japan's oldest shrines, dating back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE). Located on a hill overlooking Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, the shrine is known for its stunning architecture and sacred Eight-Horned statue. The shrine is famous for being the place where Susanoo-no-Mikoto defeated his brother, Amaterasu, in order to create the sun goddess.

Visitor tip
Visitors can climb the 333 steps of the shrine's main torii gate and ring the Eight-Horned bell three times for good luck.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its annual Tanabata festival, where locals write wishes on paper lanterns to be carried by the wind. Additionally, the shrine is said to have a strong connection to the regional god of agriculture and fishing, highlighting the importance of the Eight-Horned deity's role in ensuring fertility and abundance.
