Aomori

Located in Aomori Prefecture, the Shitennō-ji Temple's main hall is dedicated to the deity of rice, Inari Ōkami. The temple was originally a Buddhist temple but has since become a predominantly Shinto site due to the influence of local kami. Visitors can explore the surrounding fields where Inari is said to reside and make offerings at one of the many shrines that surround the temple.

Visitor tip

To fully experience the shrine, it's recommended to visit during the autumn harvest season when the rice fields are ripe with crops.

Cultural notes

Inari is often associated with fertility and prosperity. The shrine is also famous for its thousand lanterns that adorn the entrance and grounds during the spring and fall equinoxes.

Historical note

The current temple was rebuilt in 1922 after being damaged in an earthquake.
