Visitor tip

To honor the shrine's patron deity, visitors should offer prayers at the 'sokushinbutsu', an image of a dead samurai warrior, which is believed to grant good luck and protection to those who pray before it.

Cultural notes

As one of Japan's most famous shrines, Hachimanto-ji attracts millions of visitors each year. The shrine complex includes the famous 'Yoshida Gate', which symbolizes the boundary between the earthly realm and the spiritual world. During the annual 'Hachiman Festival', held in September, locals offer prayers and food to the kami for good harvests.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in its current form during the Edo period.
