Akibe Shrine is closely associated with the mythology of the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto, who was known for his mischievous nature. According to legend, Susanoo-no-Mikoto created a beautiful garden by fighting and killing the evil god of the sea, but later abandoned it, leaving behind a tree that would eventually become the shrine's main symbol.
