Kawa-no-Daikannon-ji, also known as Kawa-shita Kami no-miya, is a Shinto shrine located in the heart of Kyoto's historic center. Dedicated to the god of the river and water, it is believed to have been founded in 711 CE during the Nara period. The shrine's architecture reflects the Heian style, with a five-story pagoda and a vermilion torii gate. Cultural notes
Kawa-no-Daikannon-ji is associated with the water spirit kami, Kawatarabe no Kami. The shrine hosts an annual festival called the 'Shinshu', which celebrates the god of the river and features traditional dances and music. The shrine's gardens are also famous for their beautiful cherry blossoms in spring.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after being damaged by a flood in 2009.
