藤原八幡神社

藤原八幡神社 is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Okayama, Okayama Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto and is famous for its beautiful garden and traditional architecture. As one of the oldest shrines in Japan, it is said to have been built during the Heian period (794-1185 CE). The shrine's name 'Eightfold' refers to the eight arrows used by Susanoo-no-Mikoto to purify his sword.

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its association with Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a kami said to be responsible for storms and fertility. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in October called Hachiman-matsuri, which honors the deity's role as patron of warriors. Visitors can also see traditional crafts such as woodblock printing and weaving at the shrine's on-site museum.

Historical note

The shrine was originally founded in 749 CE by Prince Mototsune, a member of the Fujiwara clan. The current main hall was rebuilt during the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE).
