Visitor tip

Cultural notes
As a major center for education and literature, Tenjin Shrine is closely associated with the mythology of Sugawara no Michizane, the patron deity of scholars and intellectuals. During the Cherry Blossom season (late March to early April), the shrine hosts a famous festival in honor of Michizane's spirit.
Historical note
Founded in 757 AD, during the Nara period, by Prince Nagaya no Sukune, one of Emperor Shōmu's sons.
