地福八幡宮

Shimane

Located in the town of Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, Deifuku Hachiman-gu is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of prosperity and good fortune, believed to be associated with the god Hachiman. The shrine is one of the largest and most important in the region, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Deifuku Hachiman-gu is known for its unique architecture, which features a striking vermilion gate and a sacred torii standing atop a hill. The shrine is also famous for its association with the legendary Izumo Tengoku-ji Temple, said to be the heavenly home of Prince Shitennō.

Historical note

The shrine was established during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) as a result of the legendary pilgrimage of Prince Shitennō to Izumo.
