Kami Island Shrine, located in Miyagi Prefecture, is dedicated to the Shinto deity of rice and fertility, Ōkuninushi. Founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), this shrine's primary kami, Ōkuninushi, is also revered for its role in bringing prosperity and good fortune to farmers and fishermen.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's tranquil atmosphere, visit during the autumn season when the surrounding forest is ablaze with vibrant fall colors.
Cultural notes
Ōkuninushi is also associated with the legend of the Eighteen Hopes, which are believed to be the virtues and characteristics of a perfect human. The shrine hosts an annual festival in October to honor these hopes and ensure good harvests for the coming year.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by a fire in 1869.
