Located in the Chiba Prefecture, not Tokyo, Asukaga Shrine is dedicated to the god of war and fertility, Amaterasu Okami's twin sister, Himegimi. The shrine complex features a large torii gate and a sacred mirror placed within the honden to protect against evil spirits. Asukaga Shrine showcases unique architectural styles from different historical periods, including elements characteristic of the Kamakura era.

Visitor tip
When visiting, try to coincide your visit with the autumn foliage season (mid-November to mid-December) for the best views of the shrine grounds and torii gate. Be respectful and remove your shoes before entering the honden.
Cultural notes
Asukaga Shrine has connections to Japanese mythology and folklore as it is believed to be a sacred site where Himegimi appeared to human villagers, granting them fertility and prosperity. The shrine also hosts various festivals throughout the year, including the Autumn Leaves Festival and the Star Festival (Tanabata).

Founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), this shrine is one of Japan's oldest temples.
