Located in the heart of Tokyo, Senso-ji Temple is one of Japan's most famous and revered Buddhist shrines. Visitor tip
To avoid lines for the main hall, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the evening when it gets dark. Bring a camera to capture the beautiful night illuminations of the temple grounds.
Cultural notes
Senso-ji is famous for its lanterns and Nakamise shopping street. According to legend, a magical golden cat statue called Maneki-Neko, which brings good luck, is located within the temple.
Historical note
The original temple was built in 628 AD by Emperor Sendai's sister, Princess Saeki.
