弁財尊天

Ishikawa

Located in the town of Wakasa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Abenobu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess. The shrine's main hall is a traditional gongen-zukuri style building with a unique curved roof and a five-story pagoda at its rear. According to legend, the shrine was built on the site where the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune was defeated by his brother Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1185.

Visitor tip

To avoid crowds, visit early morning or late afternoon when the shrine's torii gate is bathed in golden light.

Cultural notes

Abenobu Shrine is known for its beautiful autumn foliage and its association with the legend of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The shrine also hosts a annual autumn festival, where visitors can try traditional foods and drinks, including sake and local specialties such as Wakasa beef.
