Ancient ancient forest, Shiroishi, near the village of Shiroishi, has a long history dating back to the 9th century when it was built by Emperor Seiwa as a royal retreat. The shrine is renowned for its majestic maple trees which have been designated as a national treasure and are especially celebrated during the autumn foliage season.

Visitor tip
Visit early in the morning to catch the sunset on the torii gate, a breathtaking sight during autumn.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its maple trees which have been designated as a national treasure. The forest surrounding the shrine is a great place to see the Autumn Foliage and there are also many festivals held throughout the year including Shiroishi Matsuri in May and Autumn Festival.
