Located in Ishikawa Prefecture, Hachiman Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto deity Hachiman, often associated with war, travel, and communication. Established during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), it was originally a small shrine that served as an important stopping point for travelers on the ancient Nakasendo road. Today, visitors can explore the shrine's historic grounds, which feature traditional architecture and beautifully maintained gardens. In addition to Hachiman, several other kami are enshrined at the shrine, including the local deity of smallpox and the god of wind.

Visitor tip
When visiting Hachiman Shrine, be sure to try some of the traditional sweets available for sale at the shrine's shops, which are baked using a secret family recipe passed down through generations.
Cultural notes
Hachiman Shrine is famous for its unique ' wind bell', which hangs from a long chain and swings in the breeze. According to legend, Hachiman rode his white horse over the Nakasendo road, stopping at this very spot to pray before continuing on his journey.
