Located in the town of Hakusan, on the northern coast of Ishikawa Prefecture, Dayutsuji Shrine is a Shinto temple dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu. The shrine is one of Japan's oldest and most sacred sites, believed to be founded over 1,000 years ago by Emperor Kōmei, who is said to have built it as an imitation of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto.

Visitor tip
To avoid long lines, visit during the less crowded shoulder season (April-May or September-October).
Cultural notes
Dayutsuji Shrine is famous for its beautiful garden and sacred statue of Amaterasu, known as the 'Shinmei-jingu'. The shrine also hosts an annual Dayutsuji Shrine Festival in July, where visitors can enjoy traditional dances and performances.
