Located in the Gunma Prefecture, Daitōryū Jinja is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of the Great Bird, a mythical creature believed to have created the forest and its inhabitants. The shrine's architecture reflects its location in the Sagawa River valley, with traditional Japanese-style buildings and beautifully landscaped gardens.

Cultural notes

As a major festival site, Daitōryū Jinja hosts an annual Autumn Leaf Festival (Koyo Matsuri) in November, featuring traditional performances, food stalls, and stunning displays of autumn foliage. The shrine is also believed to be connected to the mythology of the Tamashii, or the Soul, which is said to reside within the forest.

Historical note

The shrine was founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), making it one of the oldest shrines in the Gunma Prefecture.
