Ishikawa

Sanrei-jinja, located in the heart of Kanazawa, is a well-preserved Shinto shrine that dates back to the Muromachi period (1336-1573). The shrine's name translates to 'Three Wheels Shrine,' which refers to the three large stone wheels at its entrance. These wheels are believed to have been used as prayer wheels and are said to bring good luck and prosperity to those who ring them.

Visitor tip

To avoid getting stuck, make sure to ring the three wheels clockwise before passing through the entrance.

Sanrei-jinja is enshrined with the kami of the god of agriculture and fertility, as well as other local deities. The shrine is also famous for its beautiful autumn foliage and is a popular destination during the autumn leaf viewing season.

The shrine was originally built in 1540 by a local samurai family, but it has undergone several renovations and restorations over the centuries.
