Kinkaku-ji Temple is not associated with this shrine, but rather the nearby city of Tokushima has a long history dating back to the 6th century when it was the capital of the Iyo Province. The shrine was originally built in the Nara period and rebuilt during the Edo period. It is dedicated to the worship of Izanagi, the deity associated with the creation of the islands of Japan.
