Shimane

Located in the city of Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, Ifukuji Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of learning and wisdom. As the former residence of Matsudaira Nobuyoshi, the father of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the 16th shogun of Japan, ifukuji shrine is said to have been built on the site where he lived with his daughter, Lady Nene. The shrine's main hall was built in 1633 during the Edo period and features a unique, traditional design. Visitors can see the impressive statue of Matsudaira Nobuyoshi in front of the main hall.

Cultural notes

As a shrine in Matsue, Ifukuji is closely tied to the local Matsumoto family, who have been responsible for its upkeep since its founding. The shrine also has connections to the Japanese literary tradition, with several famous authors and poets visiting or being buried on its grounds.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire in 1600, during the Sengoku period.
