Four Paths Shrine, located in the mountains of western Japan, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of the four cardinal directions and the four directions of travel. According to legend, the shrine was founded by a samurai who prayed to the gods for protection before departing on a journey.

Cultural notes

The Four Paths Shrine is also famous for its 'yashiro' style temple architecture, which features a distinctive curved roofline. According to Shinto mythology, the four cardinal directions bring balance and harmony to the world.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), following its destruction during the Sengoku period (1467-1603).
