Visitor tip
Arrive early to participate in the morning ritual 'Kasuga-za' ( Kasuga Festival) where participants light a path of lanterns leading up to the shrine, believed to bring good luck.
Cultural notes
The Shitennō-ji is famous for its large number of vermilion torii gates and stunning wood carvings adorning its buildings. According to legend, the kami enshrined here was a powerful rice spirit who protected the region from famine.

Founded in the Heian period (794-1185 CE), it is one of Japan's oldest temples and shrines.
