Cultural notes

Out of respect for the kami, visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering the inner courtyard. The shrine is also famous for its 'fushigi-gahara' - a sacred boundary marked by a stone monument, believed to be the spot where the sea meets the land.

The shrine was founded in 718 AD during the Asuka period, making it one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
