Cultural notes
This shrine is famous for its connections to the Japanese folktale of Urashima Tarō. The story tells of a fisherman who visits the underwater palace of the Dragon King and falls in love with Princess Otohime. Upon returning to his village, he becomes old and eventually dies at the age of 80. Locals believe that Urashima Tarō's spirit still resides in Kuromonozaka-yama-taisha.
Historical note
The shrine was established during the early Heian period (794-1185 CE).
