新屋三社神宮

Shizuoka

新屋神宮 is a Shinto shrine located in Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Dedicated to the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, it was originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Saimei, believed to be the son of Empress Jingū. The shrine has undergone several renovations throughout its history, with notable restorations during the Edo period.

Visitor tip

Visit the shrine's tranquil gardens in the morning to witness the beautiful cherry blossom displays, usually in bloom from late March to early April.

Cultural notes

New Year's (Oshogatsu) ceremonies are particularly significant at 新屋神宮, as visitors pray for good luck and prosperity. The shrine is also famous for its unique 'Shinmei no Taki' waterfall, believed to be the divine well of the Sun Goddess.

Historical note

Originally built in the late 7th century, destroyed and rebuilt multiple times due to fires and natural disasters.
