The Matsushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Zao, the city of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. This shrine is famous for its beautiful natural surroundings and historical significance. It is also known as Mutsuzaka no Matsushita which is written in old Japanese. The primary enshrined deity is Matsushima Okami. The shrine is dedicated to Okami, the deified spirit of a fisherman's wife who was said to have been killed by her husband. According to legend, she was avenged by a giant fish that appeared from the sea and struck down her tormentor.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the beauty of this shrine, it is recommended to visit at sunrise or sunset when the surrounding mountains are bathed in a warm golden light.
Cultural notes
Matsushima Shrine is famous for its 'Sengen-yu' water source, which is believed to have healing properties. The shrine also has strong connections to the nearby Matsushima Islands, where many of Japan's most famous ukiyo-e woodblock prints were created.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1868 after being destroyed during the Boshin War.
