The Matsushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Zao, the city of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. This shrine is famous for its beautiful natural surroundings and historical significance. It is also known as Mutsuzaka no Matsushita which is written in old Japanese. The primary enshrined deity is Matsushima Okami. The shrine is dedicated to Okami, the deified spirit of a fisherman's wife who was said to have been killed by her husband. According to legend, she was avenged by a giant fish that appeared from the sea and struck down her tormentor.
