Located in the scenic town of Katsuyama, San-ryu-jinsha Shrine is dedicated to the god of water and fertility, Ryujin, as well as the god of agriculture, Susanoo. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical significance as a major pilgrimage site for travelers and farmers. Built during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), the shrine's main hall features a distinctive tiled roof and is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
San-ryu-jinsha Shrine is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage and the legend of the fox spirit kitsune, who are said to reside in the nearby forest. The shrine also hosts a annual festival in May to celebrate the god of agriculture, Susanoo.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 808 CE and has undergone numerous renovations throughout its history, including a major reconstruction in 1856.
