Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu, formerly known as Gamo Shrine, is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Dedicated to the kami of rice, fertility, and prosperity, it has been an important center for agricultural worship since its founding. The shrine's architecture is characterized by the unique 'tsukubai' water basin that provides visitors with a refreshing drink after circling the torii gate.

Visitor tip
To purify your spirit before visiting, take a moment to perform the tsukubai ritual by cupping water from the sacred basin and drinking it at least three times. This ancient tradition is believed to bring good luck and prosperity.
Cultural notes
In addition to its primary deity Hachiman, Gamo Shrine also enshrines the kami of good fortune and longevity. The shrine's autumnal festival, Koyo Matsuri, celebrates the beauty of fall foliage and attracts many visitors from across Japan.
