Located in the heart of Chiba Prefecture, Tenjin Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity Sugawara no Michizane, also known as Tenjin. The shrine's main building was rebuilt in 1934, but its historical roots date back to the Edo period. The shrine complex features beautiful gardens and traditional Japanese architecture.

Cultural notes
Tenjin Shrine is famous for its association with education and scholarship. According to legend, Sugawara no Michizane was able to retrieve his spirit from hell after death through the help of a kind priestess, and as a reward, he was allowed to become a kami and watch over scholars and students.

The shrine was built during the Edo period (1603-1868) to honor Sugawara no Michizane, a legendary scholar and politician who played a significant role in bringing Buddhism from China to Japan.
