Located in the town of Sayama, Saitama Prefecture, San'ichi Island Shrine is one of Japan's oldest shrines dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu. Founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE), it has been an important Shinto site for over 1,200 years. The shrine's main hall and a part of the outer shrine buildings were destroyed by fire in 1968, but they have since been rebuilt.
