Cultural notes

As a water spirit, Otsu no Kami is often associated with rivers and streams. The shrine's design reflects this connection, with a curved path leading to the main hall that mirrors the shape of a river bend. In Shinto tradition, rivers are believed to be inhabited by kami.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1889 after being destroyed during the Boshin War.
