Ishikawa

Established in 736, Nakatomi Shrine in Wakura-cho, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture is one of the most well-known Shinto shrines in Japan, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu. Its unique architectural style combines elements from ancient temples and shrines, featuring a vermilion torii gate, ornate roof tiles, and beautiful gardens.

Historical note

It was originally built by the Imperial family as a palace shrine for Emperor Shōmu, who is said to have taken refuge in this area during his exile in 718.
