Medoku-ji Temple, located in the Shimane Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of wisdom and medicine. The shrine's history dates back to the Muromachi period (1336-1573), during which it was an important center for the worship of the god of health, Hotoiki-gami.

Cultural notes
Medoku-ji Temple is known for its unique torii gate, which is said to be one of the oldest in Japan. The shrine also hosts an annual festival, the Hakone Matsuri, to celebrate the god of health and prosperity.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1615 after being destroyed by a fire during the Momoyama period (1573-1603).
