正八幡神社

Ishikawa

Located in the heart of Kanazawa, Higashi Chaya District's historic center, the Shinmei Sanjushi Hagura Shrine is dedicated to Fujin, the god of wind and storms, but more notably, it enshrines the Hachiman-gami (Hachiman), a prominent Shinto deity. The shrine was originally built in 1653 by Tokugawa Ieyasu's forces during their campaign against the Awa clan in Echizen Province, Ishikawa Prefecture.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the shrine's historic significance, visit during the annual Hachiman Matsuri (March 24-26) and witness the impressive martial arts performances by the Shinsenshu-hanbu-jutsu troupe.

Cultural notes

In addition to Fujin, this shrine also enshrines Benzaiten-gami (Benzaiten), a kami associated with beauty, prosperity, and music. The shrine's architecture reflects its history as a military shrine, featuring a distinctive shape known as 'hagura' that signifies the rising sun.
