Maratō Kannon-jinja is a Shinto shrine located in Aomori Prefecture, dedicated to the sea goddess Benzaiten and protector of fishermen, Maratō (Fūjin). The shrine is situated on the coast, overlooking the Tsugaru Strait. Its architecture reflects the Heian period's influence, with a five-story pagoda built during the Edo period. The shrine complex also features a large torii gate and several shrines dedicated to Benzaiten and Fūjin.

Visitor tip
For visitors approaching the shrine from the sea, be sure to first pay respects at the nearby Tamaki no Mikoto Shrine, before proceeding to Maratō Kannon-jinja.
Cultural notes
The shrine is closely associated with fishing and maritime traditions in Aomori Prefecture. Benzaiten's influence is reflected in the shrine's architecture and the many fish-shaped wooden decorations that adorn its premises. During the Setsubun festival, visitors can participate in a traditional 'fish throwing' ceremony to ward off evil spirits.
