The Indra Shrine in Aomori is one of the oldest shrines in Japan, dating back to 757 AD. Dedicated to the Shinto god Susanoo, it's an important site for the region's indigenous Ainu people as well. Visitor tip
Visit at high tide to witness the 'Gora Kaisho' festival, where devotees dress up as Susanoo and perform traditional dances on the beach.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its ' Susanoo no Mikoto', the god of storms and fertility. The enshrined deity is also associated with the Japanese god Indra, a common theme in Shinto mythology. The shrine's unique architecture features a distinctive tiled roof known as 'hi-gasa'.
