Visitor tip
To avoid the crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the evening when the shrine is less busy. Be sure to try some of the local street food at the nearby Sasaisuga Market.
Cultural notes
As a major port during the Edo period, Sasaisuga Shrine was also associated with the god of the sea, Namazu-e. The shrine's annual festival, usually held in May, features a traditional dance performance depicting the legend of Namazu-e.
Historical note
Established in the late 17th century, Sasaisuga Shrine was an important stopover for merchants and sailors traveling to and from Fukuoka.
