Sakamoto Hachimangu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, known as the birthplace of Hachiman, the Shinto god of war and patron deity of the Imperial Family. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Japanese styles, with a characteristic hexagonal torii gate and tiled roofing. Cultural notes
Sakamoto Hachimangu Shrine is known for its annual Festival of Lights, a festival held every year in May to celebrate the god's birthday. During this time, lanterns are hung throughout the shrine grounds and at night they are lit up creating a beautiful spectacle. Additionally, the shrine is famous for its traditional sake brewery on site.
Historical note
The shrine was founded in 735 CE, during the Nara period, by Emperor Shōmu's mother, Princess Nagako.
