Mitsumine Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Tokugawa, Gunma Prefecture. The shrine is famous for its beautiful natural surroundings and historical significance as a major stop on the Nakasendo route, a historic road connecting Kyoto to Edo (modern-day Tokyo). Mitsumine Shrine is also said to be the final resting place of Yorimasa, a samurai who died in battle against the forces of Takeda Shingen.

Visitor tip

To make the most of your visit, try the local specialty, 'Mitsumine sake', at one of the many shops near the shrine entrance. Be prepared for crowds on Saturdays and Sundays, especially during cherry blossom season.

Cultural notes

The shrine is associated with Fudo Myōo, a Buddhist deity believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. The shrine's torii gate is adorned with colorful paper lanterns, which are hung at night in autumn and spring. During the annual festival in October, visitors can try their hand at traditional crafts, such as paper folding.
