Visitor tip
To avoid mistaking Ichikishima Shrine for its more famous namesake, Ichikishima Island, which is located about 20 km off the coast of Aomori, visitors should look out for a small stone marker near the shrine's entrance with an image of a ship.
Cultural notes
Ichikishima Shrine is said to be associated with the kami (deity) of the sea, particularly the god Ryujin. According to legend, a traveler who was saved by a fish during a storm at sea offered thanks and made a vow to the kami. The shrine's torii gate is adorned with carvings depicting scenes from Aomori folklore, including fishing and maritime traditions.
