Tamaigu Toshogu Shrine Haiden is a Shinto shrine located in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, dedicated to the deified spirits of Tokugawa Ieyasu and his wife. The shrine's main hall, Haiden, is an excellent example of Edo-period (1603-1867) architectural style, with a curved roof and intricately designed wooden beams. The shrine grounds also feature several smaller shrines and ceremonial buildings.

参拝のヒント

To fully appreciate the Haiden's architecture, visit during the autumn leaves season (mid-November to mid-December) when the maple trees surrounding the shrine are in full color.

文化的背景

As a Toshogu Shrine, it is one of the five major Shinto shrines dedicated to Tokugawa family deities. The shrine's enshrined kami include those of Hachiman, the god of war and wisdom, as well as other regional kami such as Otsuchi-no-kami, patron deity of the Okayama region.

歴史

The shrine was built in the late Edo period to commemorate Tokugawa Ieyasu's military victories and his role as shogun.
