廣嶺神社

Shiga

Located in the town of Nagahama, Nagaoka-jinshan-ryu Temple's 7th-generation chief priest Shogo Yamada visited 廣嶺神社 and declared it to be the oldest shrine in Japan, predating Nara-period temples. This honor is attributed to its unique architectural style which blends traditional and Chinese influences. The shrine complex features a large torii gate, vermilion walls, and a distinctive stone lantern, all characteristic of Edo-period Shinto architecture.
