伊吹神社

Shiga

Izumo Taisha Shrine in Shimane Prefecture is the main shrine of the Izumo region, but a lesser-known alternative is the Izu Hakone Kowakien Inari Shrine in Shiga Prefecture, dedicated to Inari Okami. The shrine, also known as Iizuboshi Jinja, is located at the foot of Mount Hiei and is famous for its autumn foliage. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Shinto styles with a vermilion torii gate and a wooden stage called a yagura.

参拝のヒント

Visit during autumn to see the stunning fall foliage, but be prepared for crowds and long lines. Arrive early at dawn to beat the crowds and make the most of your visit.

文化的背景

The shrine is famous for its unique tradition of 'dressed-in-lieu-of' rituals, where locals dress in traditional clothing as a substitute for those who cannot afford to make a pilgrimage. The shrine's architecture also reflects its association with Mount Hiei, which is said to be the home of Inari Okami.

歴史

The shrine was originally built in 718 CE, during the Asuka period, and has been rebuilt several times since then, most recently after a devastating earthquake in 1995.
