Located in the heart of Yamagata Prefecture, but incorrectly attributed to Miyagi, Yamakami Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of mountains and forests, known as Yamakami-no-Kami. The shrine's architecture reflects the traditional style of the Nara period, with a unique roof shape that resembles a crescent moon. Visitors can walk through the serene forest surroundings and pay respects at the shrine's main hall.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's natural beauty, visit during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and take a stroll through the forest after dark when the blooming flowers are illuminated by lanterns.
Cultural notes
Yamakami Shrine is connected to the legend of the white stag, said to have appeared in the area before the shrine's founding. The shrine also hosts an annual mountain climbing festival (yama-iri) and a summer festival honoring Yamakami-no-Kami.
